7 fun cat facts to read over your cup of coffee or tea

In addition to their adorable, furry bodies, cats have a wide range of astonishing talents packed into their little bodies that allow them to perform all of the cat behaviours they need to perform: hunting, scavenging, and sleeping.

Here are 7 fun facts about our family furballs:

1. To aid in grooming and eating, cats' tongues are covered with sharp, backwards-facing hooks.

2. Free-floating clavicle bones join the cat's forelimbs to its shoulders. In order to fit through any aperture, they must be able to twist and contort themselves.

3. There are several uses for cat whiskers, including detecting vibrations from prey and determining whether or not they can squeeze through narrow spaces.

4. Cats have a better chance of surviving a fall from a greater height than one from a lower one. This is because of the time it takes to alter their body in midair. They can flip their bodies and land on their feet if they have more time to adjust.

5. It's impossible for cats to descend from a tree head-first, so they wind up caught in the branches. Because their claws are all curved downward, they can only descend backwards.

6. Cats sleep between 14 and 20 hours a day, ensuring that they have the stamina to attack their toy mice at all hours of the night! Your cat will have slept for up to 10 years of its life by the time they are 15 years old!

7. Have you ever wondered why your cat keeps her jaws open whenever she looks at you? Cats have a special organ called a 'Jacobson's Organ'. Jacobson's Organ allows them to "taste" odours. It's mostly used for analysing smells.
